A multi-method approach with various, complementing approaches will be used to treat these subjects:
1. Literature Approach:
Systematic literature analyses will include theoretical and empirical contributions on care concepts and evidence from German and international publications. Furthermore, literature analysis will serve as an access for an initial estimate of the expert-defined and empirically grounded specific and unspecific treatment demand, as well as the psychosocial stress conditions.
2. Expert Approach
An expert-based estimate of the specific demand situation will be carried out via expert estimation procedure (Delphi). In order to reach conclusions that include current standard care measures beyond the “lighthouses” of single, existing services, experts from 40-50 oncology centers will be interviewed on the care of cancer patients’ children. This will cover the features of institutions’ services, those of external cooperating institutions and aid services, as well as estimated demand and utilization.
3. Patient Approach:
From the patients’ perspective, treatment demand and determinants of utilization will be analyzed in a survey of parents with cancer. The cross-section survey of a larger patient sample will examine various epidemiologic questions that focus on the type and prevalence of psychosocial stressors in children and parents, parents’ estimated need of support and the conditions of utilization.
