Subproject 8: Adolescence and Young Adults

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

The clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, directed by Professor Resch, will examine the impact of parental cancer on adolescents and young adults (12 – 21 yrs.) in cooperation with the Heidelberg Clinic for Psychosomatics and General Clinical Medicine and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NTC) in Heidelberg.
This group will be examined in terms of reaction to the strain of parental cancer during the course of illness: adolescents will be interviewed at five measuring points (6-month intervals) over two years.

The studies focus on three main areas:

  • In qualitative interviews, adolescents’ and young adults’ feelings and worries in regard to their mothers’ or fathers’ cancer will be recorded and described.
  • Predictors for the impairment of development and the occurrence of risk behavior in adolescents and young adults confronted with parental cancer will be determined.
  • In addition to these emphases, a comprehensive study using questionnaires on mental health (depression, anxiety symptoms, posttraumatic symptoms, self-esteem) and previous biographical strain will be carried out. This aims to identify differential indicators for primarily family-oriented interventions and for individualized prevention measures for adolescents with a parent with cancer, and to develop a standardized intervention manual as well as a specific module for adolescents and young adults.

The control group will consist of a parallelized (age, sex and type of school) sample of adolescents and young adults from the general population.
